Broth Function
The purpose of an enrichment broth is to amplify very low levels of a specific bacterium within 24 to 48 hours so it can be more readily identified and isolated by a subsequent methodology. In situations where cells of the targeted bacterium are very low and injury is high, such cells must undergo repair without deleterious effects. The broth must also contain selective agents to suppress background growth which can interfere with the isolation of the target bacterium. The development of our enrichment broth was specifically formulated for the rapid growth and isolation of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli as well as C. lari.

Advantages/Benefits
1. One-hundred percent inclusivity occurred for C. jejuni, C. coli and C. lari strains tested after an incubation period of 48 hours at 41-42°C under microaerophilic conditions.
2. Incubation period can be reduced to 24 hours depending on initial inoculums titer and background bacterial flora (initial Campylobacter concentrations greater than 103 cells/ml of enrichment broth reached 107-108 cells/ml titer after 24 hours).
3. Blood not required.
4. Selectivity includes the elimination of most pseudomonad type bacteria as well as Gram (+) bacteria and yeasts.
5. Ease of preparation with forty-five day stability of broth stored at 2-8°C in the dark.
6. Can be used as an enrichment broth for Campylobacter jejuni/C. coli in conjunction with subsequent culture methods or other techniques such as PCR.
7. One bottle of broth powder and one box of supplements will make approximately 17.9 liters of enrichment broth.
